Register Early - Help us to help you!
Dear Potential Class Patrons, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage each of you to register early for our classes, trips and other activities. In almost all cases, our ability to conduct a class is based on having eight paying participants registered. The decision to run or not to run a program must be made a minimum of three days prior to the advertised start of the class. This allows us the necessary time to inform the instructor and purchase the supplies that are needed for the class. Therefore, it is imperative that you register early in order to assist us in making an informed decision as to whether or not to run a particular program. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. See you in class.

On May 5, 1864 the Army of the Potomac began crossing the Rappahannock River about 12 miles west of Fredericksburg. Its objective was to bring the Army of Northern Virginia under the command of Robert E. Lee to battle and destroy it.

Initially fooled, Lee rallied and attacked the Union Army in the Wilderness, an area of dense second growth forest. The armies fought there on May 5 and 6 amid burning woodlands and swamps. To one veteran the scene was so horrible it “seemed as though Christian men had turned into fiends.”

When it became apparent on the evening of May 6, that the Union Army could make no further headway on that ground, General U.S. Grant sought to flank the Confederates by swinging south to Spotsylvania Court House. The Rebels won the race for this key village, and the fighting between the two armies began there on May 8 and then continued, almost without let-up until May 19. This course will cover these battles in detail, discussing the strategy that shaped them and the fighting that took place.
